Dry Lips: How to Hydrate Them Without Injections and What to Expect
By Marta Fernández · Updated
Dry lips seem like a minor issue until they become constant: tightness, flaky bits, lipstick that feathers and that feeling of needing to reapply balm every hour. At the same time, many people who want better-cared-for lips don’t want an injection. This guide explains why lips dry out, what works at home, what an injection-free beauty treatment can do and, clearly, how it differs from a filler.
Why lips get dry
The skin on your lips is different from the rest of your face. It’s very thin, has hardly any oil glands and lacks the protective oily layer that the skin on your cheeks has. That makes it lose water far more easily. From there, several factors make things worse:
- The sun, all year round, which also ages the lips and dulls their colour.
- Dry air: air conditioning in summer, central heating in winter, wind.
- Licking your lips, which brings momentary relief but dries them out further as the saliva evaporates.
- Biting or picking at flaky skin.
- Breathing through your mouth, especially while you sleep.
- Certain ingredients in toothpastes, long-wear lipsticks or balms with fragrance or menthol, which can irritate.
- Some medications, such as oral isotretinoin, which dry the lips out considerably.
When it’s more than dryness: if your lips persistently crack at the corners, you notice blisters, a mark or a sore that won’t heal, or the dryness doesn’t improve with care, see your doctor or dermatologist.
What to do at home
Before any treatment, these habits make a real difference:
- An SPF lip balm in the morning and whenever you go out, winter included.
- A richer, nourishing balm at night.
- Don’t lick or bite your lips.
- Very gentle exfoliation, only now and then and never over cracks or sores.
- Drink water regularly and, if you sleep with the heating on, consider a humidifier.
- Check your products: if a lipstick or toothpaste dries or stings your lips, switch it.
With these steps, many lips improve a great deal. But when dryness is persistent, fine lines are pronounced or the colour looks dull, at-home care maintains your lips but won’t transform their texture.
What a Dermapen lip hydration treatment does
Dermapen is a microneedling device: a head with very fine needles that, working at a very shallow depth, creates micro-channels in the surface of the lip. It has two effects:
- It helps the hydrating active ingredients applied during the session to penetrate better.
- It encourages surface renewal, so that over the sessions your lips look smoother and more even.
Nothing is injected or placed beneath the skin. That’s why it doesn’t change the shape or size of your lips.
What you can expect
- More hydrated lips that feel softer from the first few days.
- Smoother texture and fewer fine lines for lipstick to feather into, gradually over the course.
- More even colour and a plumper-looking finish.
What you won’t get
- More volume.
- A more defined lip line.
- Changes to deep lines around the mouth.
The vertical lines on the skin around the mouth, sometimes called “barcode lines”, sit outside the lip itself and depend on other factors, such as sun, smoking or repeated expressions. A lip treatment doesn’t change them; if they bother you, it’s worth looking at your face as a whole.
If you have an event
Book your session at least two or three days ahead. That way your lips arrive with no redness, past the fine flaking that sometimes appears after two or three days, and ready for lipstick.
What the session involves
The area is cleansed, a topical anaesthetic is applied if needed, the lips are treated with the Dermapen and the active ingredients are applied. You’ll feel fine pricking and warmth, because lips are sensitive. Afterwards they stay slightly red and swollen for a few hours. It’s best to avoid lip make-up for 24 hours, skip spicy or very hot food that day and apply the recommended repairing balm frequently.
Injection-free hydration versus lip filler
This is the most common question, and it’s worth being clear because they’re very different things.
A hyaluronic acid filler is a medical aesthetic injection. It’s carried out by a doctor, places a product beneath the skin and changes the volume, outline or projection of the lips. It has its own indications, risks and recovery times, and should be assessed by a medical professional.
A Dermapen lip hydration treatment is a non-invasive beauty treatment. It doesn’t place any product beneath the skin or change the size of your lips: it works on the quality of their surface.
Choosing one or the other isn’t about better or worse, but about your goal. If you want more volume, beauty treatments aren’t the route for you. If you want better-cared-for, hydrated, natural-looking lips, they are.
When not to have Dermapen lip hydration
- An active cold sore, or the warning stage with tingling or itching.
- Frequent cold sores: microneedling can trigger an outbreak, so ask your doctor beforehand about preventive medication.
- Wounds, deep cracks or any lesion on the lips.
- Recent filler, until the time recommended by the doctor who carried it out has passed.
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding.
- Oral isotretinoin, anticoagulants or healing problems.

Frequently asked questions
Why are my lips always dry?
Because the skin on your lips is very thin, has hardly any oil glands and doesn't produce its own oily barrier. If you also bite them, lick them, spend long hours in air conditioning or central heating, or don't protect them from the sun, the dryness becomes constant. If they crack at the corners or don't improve with care, see your doctor.
Can lips be hydrated without injected hyaluronic acid?
Yes. A Dermapen lip hydration treatment creates superficial micro-channels in the lip and helps hydrating active ingredients applied to the skin penetrate better. Nothing is injected. The result is more hydrated, smoother lips with better colour, though without the volume a filler provides.
Does lip hydration add volume?
Not in a lasting way. Straight after the session your lips may look slightly fuller because of mild swelling, but that goes within hours. Well-hydrated lips reflect light better, which is why they look plumper, but their size and shape don't change.
How often can it be repeated?
The usual approach is a course of 3 sessions, around 3–4 weeks apart, followed by occasional sessions when you notice your lips drying out again. At-home care, especially sun protection, is what makes the result last longest.
Where can I get injection-free lip hydration in Malaga?
At Narumi, a beauty salon at Calle Cristo de la Epidemia 33, in Málaga city centre, a few minutes' walk from La Victoria and the historic centre. Marta Fernández assesses the condition of your lips and explains what result is realistic before you start.
