Eye Bags and Dark Circles: What an Eye Contour Treatment Can (and Can't) Improve

Dark circles and eye bags are among the most common cosmetic concerns and, at the same time, among the most poorly explained. Creams, gadgets and treatments are sold with promises to “erase” them, without distinguishing which type they are. And that distinction is everything: two dark circles that look the same in the mirror can have completely different causes, and only some respond to beauty treatments.

This guide helps you identify what you have, understand what an eye contour treatment can and can’t do, and recognise when what you really need is a doctor.

Why the eye area ages first

The skin around the eyes is the thinnest on the face. It has very few oil glands, so it’s less protected against water loss, and it’s constantly moving: we blink thousands of times a day, squint in the sun or at a screen, and smile. On top of all that come factors that take a particular toll:

  • The sun, the main cause of visible ageing in this area.
  • Screen time, which reduces blinking and makes eyes feel more tired.
  • Too little or irregular sleep.
  • Salt, alcohol and hormonal changes, which encourage fluid retention.
  • Rubbing your eyes, especially if you have allergies.

The result is an area that dehydrates sooner, shows fine lines earlier and instantly reflects any tiredness.

How to tell which type of dark circle you have

There’s a simple test you can do at home, in natural light and in front of a mirror:

  1. Gently stretch the skin under your eye to one side with your fingertip. If the colour lightens, it probably has a vascular component. If the colour stays the same, pigment is more likely.
  2. Look up and then tilt your head under an overhead light. If the shadow appears or deepens with light from above, there’s a structural component: a hollow under the eye.
  3. Notice how it changes through the day. If the area is much puffier when you wake up and improves by the afternoon, there’s fluid retention. If the bulge looks the same at any time of day, a fat-related bag is more likely.

Most people have a mix. So although this test is a useful guide, it’s best to have a professional look in person before deciding anything.

Dark circles that beauty treatments can improve

  • Pigmented dark circles. These have a brown tone and are more common in medium and darker skin tones. The sun makes them worse. With consistent sun protection and treatments that improve the quality of the skin around the eyes, they can gradually look softer.
  • Dark circles from thin or dehydrated skin. The skin looks dull, with fine lines, and lets what’s underneath show through more. These benefit most from an eye contour treatment: as hydration and texture improve, the area looks more even and rested.
  • Puffiness from fluid retention. Not strictly a dark circle, but often mistaken for one. Eye pressotherapy and good habits help your eyes look less puffy.

Dark circles and bags that beauty treatments don’t change

  • Vascular dark circles. Caused by small blood vessels showing through thin skin. They have a bluish or purplish tone. No beauty treatment changes them.
  • Structural or bone-related dark circles. A shadow caused by the shape of the face, volume loss or a more prominent bone. The options here are medical.
  • Fat-related eye bags. Fat that bulges beneath the eye and is present all day. The solution is surgery, blepharoplasty, assessed and performed by a surgeon.

If dark circles or puffiness appear suddenly, in one eye only, or with itching, pain, redness or changes in your vision, see your doctor before thinking about beauty treatments.

What a cosmetic eye contour treatment does

Cosmetic eye contour treatments work on the surface and quality of the skin, not its structure. That means they can improve:

  • The hydration and softness of the skin.
  • Texture and the look of fine lines.
  • Radiance in an area that tends to look dull.
  • How rested your eyes look and, in the case of eye pressotherapy, puffiness from fluid retention.

And that they can’t:

  • Reduce fat-related eye bags.
  • Change a vascular or structural dark circle.
  • Lift the eyelid or correct a drooping lid.
  • Erase deep wrinkles.

Trade names can be misleading. A treatment called a “lift” or “Eye Lift” doesn’t lift the eyelid: the name describes a better-cared-for, more rested look, not a structural change.

The habits that help most

No treatment in the salon can make up for habits working against you. What has the biggest influence on the eye area is:

  • Daily sun protection, including around the eyes, plus sunglasses.
  • Getting enough sleep and, if you wake up puffy, sleeping with your head slightly raised.
  • Cutting down on salt and alcohol in the evening if you notice fluid retention.
  • Not rubbing your eyes and removing eye make-up gently, without dragging the skin.
  • Screen breaks to blink and rest your eyes.
  • A light eye cream, patted on every day.

At Narumi

At our beauty salon in Málaga city centre, we work on the eye area with two complementary options, which you can read about in detail on our eye contour treatment in Málaga page:

  • Eye Lift with Dermapen. Superficial microneedling of the eye area with targeted active ingredients, as a course of 4 sessions. Designed to improve hydration, texture and the look of fine lines.
  • Eye pressotherapy. Goggles that apply gentle, intermittent pressure for a more rested, less puffy look, in short sessions with no downtime.

Before we start, Marta Fernández assesses with you which type of dark circle or bag you have. If your concern is a fat-related bag or a vascular or structural dark circle, we’ll tell you clearly and recommend you see a doctor, rather than suggesting sessions that won’t change it.

If you’d also like to enhance your eyes, you can combine eye contour care with a lash lift or with brow shaping through microblading.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a beauty treatment that gets rid of dark circles?

None can promise to get rid of them. What beauty treatments can do is improve the look of pigmented dark circles and those caused by thin, dehydrated skin. Vascular and structural dark circles depend on blood vessels and bone shape, and don't change with beauty treatments.

Can eye bags be reduced without surgery?

It depends on what they are. If it's puffiness from fluid retention that's worse when you wake up, eye pressotherapy and good habits help it look less noticeable. If they're fat-related bags, present all day, the solution is surgical and should be assessed by a doctor.

How long does an eye contour treatment take to show results?

Eye pressotherapy shows the same day, although the effect is temporary. A treatment such as Eye Lift with Dermapen works gradually: the improvement in hydration and texture builds over a course of several sessions, and results vary from person to person.

Is eye cream worth using?

It keeps the area hydrated and protected, which is no small thing. What no cream will do is change a vascular dark circle, a structural one or a fat-related bag. Choose a light texture, pat it on gently and don't forget sun protection around your eyes.

Where can I get an eye contour treatment in Malaga?

At Narumi, a beauty salon at Calle Cristo de la Epidemia 33, a few minutes' walk from Málaga's historic centre. Marta Fernández first assesses which type of dark circle or bag you have and tells you clearly whether Eye Lift or eye pressotherapy can help.
